THE GATHERING
Hymn
Christ
triumphant, ever reigning,
Christ
triumphant, ever reigning,
Saviour, Master, King!
Lord of heav’n, our lives sustaining,
hear us as we sing:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
Saviour, Master, King!
Lord of heav’n, our lives sustaining,
hear us as we sing:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
Word
incarnate, truth revealing,
Son of Man on earth!
pow’r and majesty concealing
by your humble birth:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
Son of Man on earth!
pow’r and majesty concealing
by your humble birth:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
Suffering
servant, scorned, ill - treated,
victim crucified!
death is through the cross defeated,
sinners justified:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
victim crucified!
death is through the cross defeated,
sinners justified:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
Priestly
king, enthroned for ever
high in heav’n above!
sin and death and hell shall never
stifle hymns of love:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
high in heav’n above!
sin and death and hell shall never
stifle hymns of love:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
So,
our hearts and voices raising
through the ages long,
ceaselessly upon you gazing,
this shall be our song:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.
through the ages long,
ceaselessly upon you gazing,
this shall be our song:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal name.

end of the world,
his
abiding presence among us.

and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God,
for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
After Jesus was taken up into heaven the apostles
went back from the Mount of Olives, as it is called, to Jerusalem, a short
distance away, no more than a sabbath walk; and when they reached the city they
went to the upper room where they were staying; there were Peter and John,
James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of
Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Jude son of James. All these joined in
continuous prayer, together with several women, including Mary the mother of
Jesus, and with his brothers.
[Acts 1:12-14]
This is the
word of the Lord.
All Thanks
be to God.
A reading
from the First Letter of St Peter.
If you
can have some share in the sufferings of Christ, be glad, because you will
enjoy a much greater gladness when his glory is revealed. It is a blessing for
you when they insult you for bearing the name of Christ, because it means that
you have the Spirit of glory, the Spirit of God resting on you. None of you
should ever deserve to suffer for being a murderer, a thief, a criminal or an
informer; but if anyone of you should suffer for being a Christian, then he is
not to be ashamed of it; he should thank God that he has been called one.
[1 Peter 4:13-16]
This is the
word of the Lord.
All Thanks
be to God.
Hymn
Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim,
Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim,
And publish abroad his wonderful name;
The name all-victorious of Jesus extol;
His kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.
God ruleth on high, almighty to save;
And still He is nigh, his presence we have;
The great congregation his triumph shall sing,
Ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.
Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!
Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son;
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,
Fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.
Then let us adore, and give him his right,
All glory and power, all wisdom and might,
All honour and blessing, with angels above,
And thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.
And publish abroad his wonderful name;
The name all-victorious of Jesus extol;
His kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.
God ruleth on high, almighty to save;
And still He is nigh, his presence we have;
The great congregation his triumph shall sing,
Ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.
Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!
Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son;
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,
Fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.
Then let us adore, and give him his right,
All glory and power, all wisdom and might,
All honour and blessing, with angels above,
And thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.

Gospel
reading
The Celebrant announces the Gospel using the
acclamation
proper to the season then introduces the Gospel
with these words
Alleluia,
alleluia!
I will
not leave you orphans, says the Lord;
I will
come back to you, and your hearts will be full of joy.
Alleluia!
All Alleluia.
The Lord be with
you.
All And also with you.
Hear the
Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John.
All Glory
to you, O Lord.
Jesus
raised his eyes to heaven and said:
‘Father,
the hour has come:
glorify
your Son
so that
your Son may glorify you;
and,
through the power over all mankind that you have given him,
let him
give eternal life to all those you have entrusted to him.
And
eternal life is this:
to know
you,
the only
true God,
and Jesus
Christ whom you have sent.
I have
glorified you on earth
and
finished the work that you gave me to do.
Now,
Father, it is time for you to glorify me
with that
glory I had with you
before
ever the world was.
I have
made your name known
to the
men you took from the world to give me.
They were
yours and you gave them to me,
and they
have kept your word.
Now at
last they know
that all
you have given me comes indeed from you;
for I
have given them the teaching you gave to me,
and they
have truly accepted this, that I came from you,
and have
believed that it was you who sent me.
I pray
for them;
I am not
praying for the world
but for
those you have given me,
because
they belong to you:
all I
have is yours
and all
you have is mine,
and in
them I am glorified.
I am not
in the world any longer,
but they
are in the world,
and I am
coming to you.’
[John 17:1-11]
This is the
Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise
to you, O Christ.

Hymn
The
head that once was crowned with thorns
The
head that once was crowned with thorns
is crowned with glory now;
a royal diadem adorns
the mighty Victor's brow.
is crowned with glory now;
a royal diadem adorns
the mighty Victor's brow.
The
highest place that heav'n affords
is his, is his by right,
the King of kings and Lord of lords,
and heav'n's eternal Light;
is his, is his by right,
the King of kings and Lord of lords,
and heav'n's eternal Light;
The
joy of all who dwell above,
the joy of all below,
to whom he manifests his love,
and grants his name to know.
the joy of all below,
to whom he manifests his love,
and grants his name to know.
To
them the cross, with all its shame,
with all its grace, is given;
Their name an everlasting name,
Their joy the joy of heaven.
with all its grace, is given;
Their name an everlasting name,
Their joy the joy of heaven.
They
suffer with their Lord below,
they reign with him above;
their profit and their joy to know
the mystery of his love.
they reign with him above;
their profit and their joy to know
the mystery of his love.
The
cross he bore is life and health,
though shame and death to him;
his people's hope, his people's wealth,
their everlasting theme.
though shame and death to him;
his people's hope, his people's wealth,
their everlasting theme.

THE DISMISSAL
Notices
Hymn
We have a gospel to proclaim,
We have a gospel to proclaim,
good news for men in all the earth;
The gospel of a Saviour’s name,
we sing his glory, tell his worth.
good news for men in all the earth;
The gospel of a Saviour’s name,
we sing his glory, tell his worth.
Tell of His birth at Bethlehem,
not in a royal house or hall
but in a stable dark and dim,
the Word made flesh, a light for all.
Tell of His death at Calvary,
hated by those he came to save,
in lonely suffering on the cross,
for all he loved his life He gave.
Tell of that glorious Easter morn,
empty the tomb, for he was free;
He broke the power of death and hell
that we might share his victory.
Tell of his reign at God’s right hand,
by all creation glorified,
he sends his Spirit on his Church,
to live for him, the Lamb who died.
Now we rejoice to name him King,
Jesus is Lord of all the earth,
This gospel message we proclaim,
we sing his glory, tell his worth.
[NEH 486]
