THE GATHERING
Hymn
O praise ye the Lord!
O praise ye the Lord!
Praise him in the height;
rejoice in his word,
ye angels of light;
ye heavens, adore him
by whom ye were made,
and worship before him,
in brightness arrayed.
O praise ye the Lord!
Praise him upon earth,
in tuneful accord,
ye sons of new birth;
praise him who has brought you
his grace from above,
praise him who has taught you
to sing of his love.
O praise ye the Lord!
All things that give sound;
each jubilant chord
re-echo around;
loud organs, his glory
forth tell in deep tone,
and sweet harp, the story
of what he has done.
O praise ye the Lord!
Thanksgiving and song
to him be outpoured
all ages along!
For love in creation,
for heaven restored,
for grace of salvation,
O praise ye the Lord!
Praise him in the height;
rejoice in his word,
ye angels of light;
ye heavens, adore him
by whom ye were made,
and worship before him,
in brightness arrayed.
O praise ye the Lord!
Praise him upon earth,
in tuneful accord,
ye sons of new birth;
praise him who has brought you
his grace from above,
praise him who has taught you
to sing of his love.
O praise ye the Lord!
All things that give sound;
each jubilant chord
re-echo around;
loud organs, his glory
forth tell in deep tone,
and sweet harp, the story
of what he has done.
O praise ye the Lord!
Thanksgiving and song
to him be outpoured
all ages along!
For love in creation,
for heaven restored,
for grace of salvation,
O praise ye the Lord!

The Collect
Let us pray
O God, who show the light of your truth
to those who go astray,
so that they may return to the right path,
give all who for the faith they profess
are accounted Christians
the grace to reject whatever is contrary to the
name of Christ
and to strive after all that does it honour.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the
Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
All Amen.
LITURGY OF
THE WORD
Old
Testament and New Testament readings.
A reading from the Prophecy of Isaiah.
Thus says
the Lord:
Oh, come to
the water all you who are thirsty;
though you
have no money, come!
Buy corn
without money, and eat,
and, at no
cost, wine and milk.
Why spend
money on what is not bread,
your wages
on what fails to satisfy?
Listen,
listen to me, and you will have good things to eat
and rich food
to enjoy.
Pay
attention, come to me;
listen, and
your soul will live.
With you I
will make an everlasting covenant
out of the
favours promised to David.
See, I have
made of you a witness to the peoples,
a leader and
a master of the nations.
See, you
will summon a nation you never knew,
those
unknown will come hurrying to you,
for the sake
of the Lord your God,
of the Holy
One of Israel who will glorify you.
Seek the
Lord while he is still to be found,
call to him
while he is still near.
Let the wicked
man abandon his way,
the evil man
his thoughts.
Let him turn
back to the Lord who will take pity on him,
to our God
who is rich in forgiving;
for my
thoughts are not your thoughts,
my ways not
your ways – it is the Lord who speaks.
Yes, the
heavens are as high above earth
as my ways
are above your ways,
my thoughts
above your thoughts.
Yes, as the
rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering
the earth, making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower and
bread for the eating, so the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me
empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do.
Yes, you
will leave with joy
and be led
away in safety.
Mountains
and hills will break into joyful cries before you
and all the
trees of the countryside clap their hands.
Cypress will
grow instead of thorns,
myrtle
instead of briars.
And this
will make the Lord famous,
a sign for
ever, ineffaceable.
[Isaiah 55:1-13]
This is the word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the Romans.
I think that what we suffer in this life can never
be compared to the glory, as yet unrevealed, which is waiting for us. The whole
creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal his sons. It was not for any
fault on the part of creation that it was made unable to attain its purpose, it
was made so by God; but creation still retains the hope of being freed, like
us, from its slavery to decadence, to enjoy the same freedom and glory as the
children of God. From the beginning till now the entire creation, as we know,
has been groaning in one great act of giving birth; and not only creation, but
all of us who possess the first-fruits of the Spirit, we too groan inwardly as
we wait for our bodies to be set free.
[Romans 8:18-23 ]
This is the
word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
Hymn
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, thy great Name we praise.
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, thy great Name we praise.
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
To all life thou givest—to both great and small;
In all life thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but nought changeth thee.
In all life thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but nought changeth thee.
Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
All laud we would render: O help us to see
’Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.
Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
All laud we would render: O help us to see
’Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.
[NEH 377]
Alleluia,
alleluia!
The seed is
the word of God, Christ the sower;
whoever
finds this seed will remain for ever.
Alleluia!
All Alleluia.
The Lord be with you.
All And also with you.
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to St Matthew.
All Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus left
the house and sat by the lakeside, but such large crowds gathered round him
that he got into a boat and sat there. The people all stood on the beach, and
he told them many things in parables.
He said,
‘Imagine a sower going out to sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of
the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock
where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no
depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not
having any roots, they withered away. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns
grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some
a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Listen, anyone who has ears!’
Then the
disciples went up to him and asked, ‘Why do you talk to them in parables?’
‘Because’ he replied, ‘the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven are revealed to you,
but they are not revealed to them. For anyone who has will be given more, and
he will have more than enough; but from anyone who has not, even what he has
will be taken away. The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look
without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. So in their case
this prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled:
You will
listen and listen again, but not understand,
see and see
again, but not perceive.
For the
heart of this nation has grown coarse,
their ears
are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes,
for fear
they should see with their eyes,
hear with
their ears,
understand
with their heart,
and be
converted
and be
healed by me.
‘But happy
are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you
solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw
it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.
‘You,
therefore, are to hear the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of
the kingdom without understanding, the evil one comes and carries off what was
sown in his heart: this is the man who received the seed on the edge of the
path. The one who received it on patches of rock is the man who hears the word
and welcomes it at once with joy. But he has no root in him, he does not last;
let some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, and he falls
away at once. The one who received the seed in thorns is the man who hears the word,
but the worries of this world and the lure of riches choke the word and so he
produces nothing. And the one who received the seed in rich soil is the man who
hears the word and understands it; he is the one who yields a harvest and
produces now a hundredfold, now sixty, now thirty.’
[Matthew 13:1-23]
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise
to you, O Christ.

All and also with you.
Hymn
Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways!
Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper reverence, praise.
In simple trust like theirs who heard
Beside the Syrian sea
The gracious calling of the Lord,
Let us, like them, without a word
Rise up and follow Thee.
O Sabbath rest by Galilee!
O calm of hills above,
Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
The silence of eternity
Interpreted by love!
Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.
Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm.
Forgive our foolish ways!
Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper reverence, praise.
In simple trust like theirs who heard
Beside the Syrian sea
The gracious calling of the Lord,
Let us, like them, without a word
Rise up and follow Thee.
O Sabbath rest by Galilee!
O calm of hills above,
Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
The silence of eternity
Interpreted by love!
Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.
Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm.

Prayer over
the gifts
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,
through your goodness we have this bread we offer:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us the bread of life.
All Blessed be God for ever.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,
through your goodness we have this wine we offer:
fruit of the vine and work of human hands,
it will become our spiritual drink.
All Blessed be God for ever.
Pray my dear friends,
that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God,
the almighty Father.
All May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good
and the good of all his holy Church.
Look upon the offerings of the Church, O Lord,
as she makes her prayer to you,
and grant that, when consumed by those who believe,
they may bring ever greater holiness.
Through Christ our Lord.
All Amen.
The
Eucharistic Prayer
The Lord be
with you
All and also with you.
Lift up your
hearts.
All We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give
thanks to the Lord our God.
All It is right to give thanks and
praise.
It is truly right and
just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to
give you thanks,
holy Father, almighty
and eternal God.
From sunrise to sunset
this day is holy,
for Christ has risen
from the tomb
and scattered the
darkness of death
with light that will not
fade.
This day the risen Lord
walks with your gathered people,
unfolds for us your word,
and makes himself known in the breaking of the
bread.
And though the night
will overtake this day
you summon us to live in
endless light,
the never-ceasing
sabbath of the Lord.
And so, with choirs of
angels
and with all the
heavenly host,
we proclaim your glory
and join their unending
song of praise:
All Holy,
holy, holy Lord,
God of power
and might,
heaven and
earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in
the highest.
Blessed is
he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in
the highest.
Lord,
you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,
and
according to your holy will,
these gifts of bread and wine
may be to us the body and blood
these gifts of bread and wine
may be to us the body and blood
of our
Lord Jesus Christ;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed,
took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
who, in the same night that he was betrayed,
took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
take, eat;
this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
do this in remembrance of me.
In the
same way, after supper
he took the cup and gave you thanks;
he gave it to them, saying:
he took the cup and gave you thanks;
he gave it to them, saying:
Drink
this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Great
is the mystery of faith.
All Christ
has died;
Christ
is risen;
Christ
will come again.
And
so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,
his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;
his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;
rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious
ascension,
and looking for his coming in glory,
we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.
and looking for his coming in glory,
we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.
As we
offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,
we bring before you this bread and this cup
we bring before you this bread and this cup
and we
thank you for counting us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.
to stand in your presence and serve you.
Send
the Holy Spirit on your people
and gather into one in your kingdom
all who share this one bread and one cup,
and gather into one in your kingdom
all who share this one bread and one cup,
so
that we, in the company of Mary the Mother of God,
St
Peter Prince of the Apostles, St Stephen our Patron,
St
Nicholas, St Michael, St Bonaventure,
and
all the Apostles, Martyrs and Saints,
may praise and glorify you for ever,
through Jesus Christ our Lord;
may praise and glorify you for ever,
through Jesus Christ our Lord;
by
whom, and with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,
for ever and ever.
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,
for ever and ever.
All
Amen.
The Lord’s
Prayer
At the Saviour’s command
and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:
All Our
Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be
thy name;
thy kingdom
come;
thy will be
done;
on earth as
it is in heaven.
Give us this
day our daily bread.
And forgive
us our trespasses
as we
forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us
not into temptation;
but deliver
us from evil.
For thine is
the kingdom,
the power
and the glory,
for ever and
ever.
Amen.
The Breaking of the bread
We
break this bread to share in the body of Christ
All
Though we are
many, we are one body,
because
we all share in one bread.
The Agnus Dei
All Jesus,
Lamb of God,
have mercy
on us.
Jesus,
bearer of our sins,
have mercy
on us.
Jesus,
redeemer of the world,
grant us
peace.
Ecce Agnus Dei
Behold
the Lamb of God,
who
takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed
are those who are called to his supper.
All Lord I am not worthy
that
you should enter under my roof,
but
only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.
Communion Antiphon
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
remains in me and I in him, says the Lord.
The
people make their spiritual communion
Post
Communion Prayer
Having consumed these gifts, we pray, O Lord,
that, by our participation in this mystery,
its saving effects upon us may grow.
Through Christ our Lord.
All Amen.
All Almighty
God,
we thank you for feeding us
with the body and blood of
your Son Jesus Christ.
Through him we offer you our
souls and bodies
to be a living sacrifice.
Send us out
in the power of your Spirit
to live and work
to your praise and glory.
Amen.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord:
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord:
Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice;
Tender to me the promise of his word;
In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.
Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice;
Tender to me the promise of his word;
In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;
His mercy sure, from age to age the same;
His holy name, the Lord, the mighty One.
Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;
His mercy sure, from age to age the same;
His holy name, the Lord, the mighty One.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might:
Powers and dominions lay their glory by;
Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,
The hungry fed, the humble lifted high.
Powers and dominions lay their glory by;
Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,
The hungry fed, the humble lifted high.
